A gas company located in Zigong, China, specializes in the production of fine chemicals and electronic specialty gases. During the manufacturing process, several production units require continuous transfer and circulation of corrosive chemical liquids, including 30% hydrochloric acid (HCl), 98% sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄), and other acidic process solutions.
Due to the strong corrosive characteristics of these chemicals, the pumping equipment must provide excellent corrosion resistance, reliable sealing performance, and stable operation under continuous production conditions.
At the beginning of this project, the customer used a Baja tahan karat 316L chemical pump for acid transfer applications. However, after a period of operation, the pump gradually showed corrosion problems on wetted components, mechanical seal leakage, and frequent shutdowns for maintenance.
These issues not only increased maintenance costs but also affected the stability of the production process. The customer required a more reliable, high-corrosion-resistant chemical pump solution that could handle aggressive acid media while reducing unexpected downtime.
Engineering Analysis of the Pumping Challenge
After receiving the project requirements, the Changyu Pump engineering team analyzed the customer’s operating conditions, including the chemical properties of the media, temperature requirements, operating pressure, and installation environment.
The main challenge was not simply achieving the required flow rate and head, but ensuring long-term reliability when transferring highly corrosive chemical liquids.
The production process involved different acid transfer applications. The hydrochloric acid section required a pump capable of resisting strong chloride corrosion, while the sulfuric acid section required stable operation under high-concentration acid conditions.
Based on the customer’s previous experience with 316L stainless steel pumps, Changyu Pump determined that upgrading the metal material alone would not fully solve the corrosion and leakage issues. A more suitable solution required a pump structure using chemically stable lining materials combined with reliable mechanical sealing technology.
Therefore, Changyu Pump recommended the CYF series fluoroplastic centrifugal pump with FEP lining structure.

The CYF series adopts a steel shell combined with a FEP fluoroplastic lining structure. Compared with conventional 316L stainless steel pumps, this design prevents corrosive media from directly contacting the metal pressure components.
The FEP lining provides excellent chemical resistance, while the steel outer structure maintains the mechanical strength required for industrial operation.
This combination allows the pump to achieve both corrosion resistance and long-term mechanical reliability, making it suitable for demanding chemical transfer applications.
FEP Lined Structure for Acid Transfer Applications
For this project, corrosion resistance was the key factor in pump selection.
Traditional stainless steel pumps may experience corrosion problems when operating in strong acid environments for extended periods, especially when exposed to high concentrations, temperature variations, or complex chemical conditions.
Changyu Pump selected a steel-lined FEP structure to address these challenges.
The fluoroplastic lining isolates the corrosive medium from the metal body and provides excellent resistance against aggressive chemicals, including:
- Hydrochloric acid (HCl);
- Sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄);
- Acidic process liquids;
- Other corrosive chemical solutions.
Compared with the customer’s previous 316L stainless steel pump, the FEP-lined design significantly improves corrosion resistance and helps extend equipment service life.
Mechanical Seal Optimization to Reduce Leakage Risk
During the previous operation, mechanical seal leakage was one of the main problems affecting equipment reliability.
To improve sealing performance, Changyu Pump configured the CYF series with an external bellows mechanical seal design.
The sealing system can be equipped with corrosion-resistant materials such as:
- 99.9% alumina ceramic;
- Silicon carbide (SiC);
- Filled PTFE materials.
The external bellows structure reduces the exposure of sensitive metal components to corrosive media and improves sealing stability during continuous operation.
Through the combination of proper material selection and optimized sealing design, the CYF pump effectively reduces the risk of chemical leakage and improves operational safety.

After installation, the CYF series fluoroplastic centrifugal pump was successfully applied in the customer’s fine chemical production process for hydrochloric acid and sulfuric acid transfer.
Compared with the previous 316L stainless steel pump, the new solution effectively improved equipment reliability.
The FEP-lined structure solved corrosion issues in strong acid media, while the optimized mechanical seal design reduced leakage and maintenance requirements.
