The customer is a lithium resource processing company in Chile. Its production process includes mineral leaching, lithium salt solution treatment, purification, concentration, lithium carbonate precipitation and mother liquor circulation. The pumping conditions change between process stages. Some process liquids are strongly corrosive, while the slurry generated during lithium carbonate precipitation and circulation may contain fine particles and crystals. For this reason, the pumps need to handle corrosion, particle wear, sealing and continuous operation.

Changyu Pump selected UHB, CYF and CYH series pumps according to the medium composition, corrosion level, solids content and operating conditions of each process section.

Why a Lithium Slurry Pump Is Used for Lithium Carbonate Slurry

Lithium carbonate precipitation produces a slurry rather than a completely clear liquid. Fine particles and crystals can pass through the pump together with the liquid, creating a wear issue in addition to corrosion.

For this part of the process, Changyu Pump uses the UHB corrosion and wear resistant slurry pump. The final UHB model is selected according to the actual solids content, particle size, temperature, flow rate and head.

Engineer’s Advice

  • If the lithium carbonate process liquid contains noticeable solid particles, it should not be treated simply as an acid-pumping application.
  • Corrosion and particle wear need to be considered together. Solids content and particle size are particularly important because they affect the impeller, flow passages and mechanical seal.

CYF Fluoroplastic-Lined Centrifugal Pump for Acidic Liquids

CYF is mainly used for sulfuric acid leach solution, acidic process liquid, lithium salt solution and other corrosive liquids with relatively low solids content.

The pump uses a fluoroplastic-lined structure to reduce direct contact between the corrosive medium and the metal base.

For sulfuric acid leach solution, the material should not be selected from the medium name alone. Acid concentration and operating temperature also need to be confirmed.

CYH Corrosion Resistant Chemical Pump for Process Liquids

CYH is mainly used for acidic solutions, lithium salt process liquids, mother liquor and other corrosive chemical media.

The wetted material can be selected according to the medium composition, concentration, temperature and operating conditions.

For mother liquor and process circulation, continuous operation is also an important consideration because the pump may need to operate for long periods.

Pump Selection Logic

The basic selection logic for this project was:

  • Corrosive liquid with low solids content → CYF / CYH
  • Corrosive medium containing solid particles → UHB

The final pump model still needs to be confirmed according to the actual flow rate, head, concentration, temperature, solids content and particle size.

Engineer’s Advice for Lithium Slurry Pump Selection

For lithium processing applications, pump selection should start with the actual operating condition rather than the medium name alone.

Before selecting a Lithium Slurry Pump, the following information should be confirmed:

  • Medium name and composition
  • Acid or salt concentration

  • CYH was used for lithium salt solutions, mother liquor and other process liquids.
