What is a horizontal slurry pump?

A horizontal slurry pump is a pompe centrifuge designed to convey abrasive or corrosive slurries containing solid particles. Unlike standard clean-water pumps, its hydraulic components, flow-passing parts, and bearing system are all designed for heavy-duty applications.

The PGY series features a single-stage, single-suction, horizontal centrifugal design. The pump body employs a double-casing design: the outer layer withstands pressure, whilst the inner flow-passing components are replaceable. This design eliminates the need to dismantle the inlet and outlet piping during maintenance, making on-site replacement of wear parts highly convenient.

The impeller diameter directly determines the head. The PGY series can achieve a maximum head of approximately 100 metres. Discharge diameters range from 40 mm to 400 mm, covering common applications from fine-particle to tailings conveyance.

Engineer‘s Notes

  • BTMCr27: Standard wear-resistant choice for iron ore, copper ore, coal slurry, and neutral or mildly corrosive conditions.
  • BTMCr28: Specifically designed for FGD applications where slurry pH < 4 and chloride content is present.
  • BTMCr33: Used for severe combined corrosion and wear, such as phosphoric acid slurry (pH ≥ 1) and oxygen-containing media.
  • Duplex Stainless Steel: Recommended when chloride concentration is extremely high or when high chrome alloys cannot tolerate the chemical environment.

Shaft Seal Type

Shaft seal is one of the most critical components in a centrifugal slurry pump. PGY offers four sealing options. Selection depends on flushing water pressure, leakage requirement, and site conditions.

Shaft Seal Type

Gland packing with auxiliary impeller double seal

The auxiliary impeller acts as a turbine, reducing the pressure of slurry escaping from the rear of the impeller. The gland packing seal serves as a secondary seal, where multiple packing rings are compressed by the stuffing box and wear-resistant sleeve, requiring only low-pressure flushing water.

This is the standard sealing type for PGY pumps, offering easy maintenance and low cost.

Gland packing seal

Where an impeller is not applicable, a soft gland packing seal is used. Several soft packing rings are compressed by the stuffing box and wear-resistant sleeve.

Since there is no auxiliary impeller to reduce pressure by centrifugal action, higher-pressure flushing water must be introduced into the packing through a water seal ring to cool the packing and prevent casing leakage.

Garniture mécanique

A mechanical seal consists of a stationary face and a rotating face, which are pressed together under mechanical and hydraulic forces to prevent leakage.

It provides the best sealing performance and is used in zero-leakage conditions.

The PGY pump adopts a double mechanical seal, requiring the flushing water pressure to be higher than the pressure in the sealing chamber.

Mechanical seal with auxiliary impeller

An auxiliary impeller is installed between the mechanical seal and the impeller. The auxiliary impeller acts as a turbine, reducing the pressure in the sealing chamber. Therefore, this sealing arrangement requires a lower flushing water pressure than a conventional mechanical seal, as long as a good water flow is maintained.

Important Note

The above types of shaft seals require appropriate flushing water. The flow rate and pressure of the flushing water will depend on the pump parameters. For other special shaft seal options, please contact us.

Why choose Changyu Pump?

Because we understand slurry pump applications better than anyone else

1. Validated under real-world conditions

Our material and sealing configurations are based on genuine customer feedback and experimental data. BTMCr28 was developed specifically for low-pH conditions in FGD systems, whilst BTMCr33 withstands corrosion in phosphoric acid slurries with a pH of 1 or higher. These improvements stem from real-world feedback from mines, power stations and chemical plants.

2. Material Selection Based on the Medium

Although all referred to as ‘high-chromium alloys’, Cr27, Cr28 and Cr33 differ in both price and performance. We will ask specific questions: What is the pH level? Are the particles sharp or rounded? etc., before recommending the appropriate material. We provide every customer with the pump offering the best value for money.

3. Traceable Performance Data

Every PGY pump is accompanied by performance test records before leaving the factory. Actual measured values for flow rate, head, efficiency and NPSHr are available for verification; we do not simply provide a theoretical curve diagram.

4. Rapid Spare Parts Response

We maintain stock of commonly used flow-through components (impellers, wear plates, shaft sleeves) covering most specifications. In urgent cases, we dispatch within 24 hours.

5. Flexible Sealing Solutions – No Need for Site Modifications

We customise pumps to suit your site conditions. Low water pressure? Opt for a secondary impeller with packing. Requiring zero leakage? Choose a double-ended mechanical seal. Need both low water pressure and zero leakage? Combine a secondary impeller with a mechanical seal. One pump body, four sealing options – no need to modify your pipework. We can meet your requirements.

How to Select the Right Horizontal Slurry Pump

Four Questions to Filter Out Unsuitable Pumps

Selection is not about picking the max flow from a catalog. Answer these four questions in order, and you will narrow down to 2-3 candidate models.

Question 1: What is the slurry composition?

  • Solid particle type (sharp / rounded), concentration (wt%), maximum particle size
  • pH value, chloride content, oxygen presence or not
État de la boueMatériau recommandé
pH ≥ 6, neutral or mildly corrosiveBTMCr27
pH < 4, FGD or chloride-containingBTMCr28
pH 1~4, oxygen-containing (e.g., phosphoric acid)BTMCr33
High chloride or strong acidDuplex stainless steel

Question 2: What are the hydraulic parameters?

  • Design flow rate (m³/h)
  • Required head (m)
  • Must check: NPSHa > pump NPSHr

PGY single-stage head reaches approximately 100 meters maximum. If required head exceeds 70 meters, prioritize high-head models such as 150PGY-50 or 200PGY-65. If head is below 40 meters, consider speed reduction or smaller impeller options to avoid motor oversizing.

Question 3: What is the on-site flushing water condition?

Flushing Water PressureLeakage RequirementRecommended Seal
Low pressure (<2 bar)Slight dripping allowedGland packing with auxiliary impeller (standard)
High pressure (≥3 bar)Slight dripping allowedGland packing only
Any pressureAucune fuiteDouble garniture mécanique
Low pressure (<2 bar)Aucune fuiteMechanical seal with auxiliary impeller

Question 4: What is the site maintenance practice?

  • Is periodic gland packing adjustment acceptable?
  • Are spare parts replaced in-house or outsourced?
  • Is there budget for stocking common wetted parts?

If on-site maintenance capability is limited, choose gland packing with auxiliary impeller – the simplest to maintain. If maintenance-free operation is required, mechanical seal is more suitable, but stable flushing water supply must be guaranteed.

FAQ

With large diameter impeller, the maximum head reaches approximately 100 meters (tested with clean water). Actual head with solid-containing slurry will be slightly lower. We provide performance correction factors upon request.

Yes, depending on the discharge size. PGY series covers discharge diameters from 40mm to 400mm. The maximum passable particle size is approximately 1/3 to 1/4 of the discharge diameter. For larger particles, special flow path design is available. Contact us for details.

Typically, flushing water pressure should be 0.5~1 bar lower than the pump discharge pressure. Flow rate is approximately 0.5~2 m³/h. This configuration is more tolerant to low water pressure compared to mechanical seals, making it suitable for sites with unstable water supply.

It depends entirely on slurry abrasiveness. For iron ore tailings with high SiO₂ content, high chrome alloy liners typically last 3,000 to 6,000 hours. We can provide reference data from similar operating conditions upon request.

In most cases, the base dimensions are different. However, we can customize the suction and discharge flange positions based on your existing piping centerline height and connection requirements. Provide us with the drawing of your current pump, and we will check compatibility.

Yes. Every PGY model has actual test performance curves, including flow-head, flow-efficiency, flow-power, and NPSHr curves with different impeller diameters. Electronic copies are available during the selection stage.
