Filter Press Feed Pump for Slurry, Tailings, Sludge and Chemical Applications
A filter press feed pump provides the pressure and flow required to deliver slurry into filter press chambers during solid-liquid separation. Unlike ordinary clean-water pumping, filter press feeding involves changing flow resistance as the filter chambers gradually fill with solids.
Changyu provides filter press feed pump solutions for abrasive slurry, corrosive slurry, sludge, tailings, coal slurry and chemical process media. Depending on the application, pump materials, hydraulic design, shaft sealing and motor configuration can be selected according to solids concentration, particle size, pH, temperature, required flow and feed pressure.
For applications requiring variable-frequency operation, the pump can operate through a staged feeding process: high-flow, low-head feeding during initial chamber filling, followed by low-flow, high-head operation as filtration resistance increases.
Applications of Filter Press Feed Pumps
Filter press systems are used across mining, coal preparation, chemical processing, metallurgy, wastewater treatment and sludge dewatering. The feed pump therefore needs to handle different combinations of solids, particles, viscosity and chemical corrosion.
Changyu filter press feed pump solutions can be considered for: Coal slurry / Flotation tailings / Mine tailings / Mineral concentrate slurry / Chemical slurry / Acidic slurry / Alkaline slurry / Industrial sludge / Municipal sludge / Electroplating sludge / Phosphate slurry / Process wastewater / Other solid-containing process fluids
The pump should be selected according to the actual medium rather than the filter press type alone.
Solids concentration, particle size, specific gravity, pH, temperature, required flow, discharge pressure and pipeline conditions should be confirmed before final selection.
Changyu solutions cover three main pumping duties:
Filter Press Feeding / Filtrate Transfer / Filter Cloth Washing
Filter Press Feeding
Application:
The filter press feed pump transfers slurry from a slurry tank or process vessel into the filter press chambers.
At the beginning of the cycle, the filter chambers have relatively low resistance, so the system requires higher flow to fill the chambers efficiently. As solids accumulate and the filter cake forms, resistance increases, flow naturally decreases and higher discharge pressure is required.
For this reason, the filter press feed pump should be selected for the complete filtration cycle rather than for the initial filling condition alone.
Recommended Pumps
Suitable configurations can be selected for abrasive or corrosive slurry according to the medium properties.

Filtrate Transfer
Application:
After solid-liquid separation, the liquid phase discharged from the filter press may need to be transferred to a reuse tank, wastewater treatment system, process unit or discharge point.
Compared with slurry feeding, filtrate usually contains significantly fewer solids.
The main considerations therefore shift toward:
- Corrosion resistance
- Flow stability
- Energy efficiency
- Chemical compatibility
- Required head
- Continuous or intermittent operation
Recommended Pumps:
The pump material should be selected according to the chemical composition, concentration and temperature of the filtrate.

Filter Cloth Washing
Application:
After filter cake discharge, filter cloths are washed to remove residual solids and maintain filtration performance during the next cycle.
The washing system requires stable pressure and reliable operation during repeated starting and stopping.

Filter Press Feed Pump Material Selection
Different filter press applications can involve either abrasion, corrosion or a combination of both. Changyu selects wetted materials according to the actual slurry characteristics.
| Pump Material | Suitable Conditions | Typical Applications |
|---|---|---|
| UHMWPE | Abrasive and corrosive slurry | Tailings, coal slurry, chemical slurry |
| Wear-Resistant Alloy | Heavy abrasive slurry | Mining, mineral processing |
| Fluoroplastic | Strongly corrosive slurry | Chemical processing, acidic slurry |
| Stainless Steel | Mildly corrosive or relatively clean fluids | Filtrate, food, pharmaceutical and chemical applications |
| Rubber Lined | Abrasive slurry and sludge | Mining, coal preparation and wastewater |
The final material should be determined by the combination of abrasion, corrosion, temperature and solids content, rather than by the medium name alone.
How to Select a Filter Press Feed Pump
The following operating parameters should be provided before pump selection:
| Parameter | Why It Matters |
| Medium | Determines material compatibility |
| Solids Concentration | Determines wear and hydraulic requirements |
| Particle Size | Influences impeller and flow-passage selection |
| Specific Gravity | Affects hydraulic performance and motor power |
| pH | Determines corrosion resistance |
| Temperature | Influences material and sealing selection |
| Required Flow | Determines pump capacity |
| Required Pressure | Determines pressure capability |
| Filter Press Model | Defines filtration requirements |
| Pipeline Length | Affects total system resistance |
| Installation Height | Affects suction conditions |
Important Selection Principle
Select the filter press feed pump according to the complete operating cycle, not only the initial filling stage. This is particularly important for slurry applications where the system pressure changes as the filter cake develops.
Pump Selection by Filter Press Application
| Application | Pumped Medium | Main Challenge | Recommended Pump |
| Coal Preparation | Coal slurry / flotation tailings | Abrasion + high solids | UHMWPE Slurry Pump |
| Mining & Mineral Processing | Mine tailings / concentrate slurry | Heavy abrasion | Wear-Resistant Slurry Pump |
| Chemical Processing | Acidic / alkaline slurry | Corrosion + abrasion | Corrosion-Resistant Slurry Pump |
| Phosphate Processing | Phosphate slurry | Corrosion + suspended solids | UHMWPE / Fluoroplastic Pump |
| Sludge Dewatering | Industrial / municipal sludge | Solids + fibers | Suitable Slurry Pump |
| Electroplating | Metal-containing sludge | Corrosion + solids | Corrosion-Resistant Pump |
| Filtrate Transfer | Filtered process liquid | Chemical compatibility | Chemical / Stainless Steel Pump |
| Filter Cloth Washing | Washing water | Pressure + repeated operation | High-Head Centrifugal Pump |

FAQ
What is a filter press feed pump?
A filter press feed pump transfers slurry into filter press chambers during solid-liquid separation. It must provide sufficient flow during chamber filling and maintain adequate pressure as filtration resistance increases.
What type of pump is used for filter press feeding?
Centrifugal slurry pumps can be used for filter press feeding when their hydraulic performance, pressure rating, materials and sealing configuration match the slurry and filter press requirements.
Why does filter press feed pressure increase?
As slurry solids accumulate inside the filter chambers, the filter cake becomes thicker and filtration resistance increases. The pump therefore operates at lower flow and higher pressure toward the later stage of the filtration cycle.
Can a filter press feed pump handle abrasive slurry?
Yes, a properly selected slurry pump can handle abrasive media such as coal slurry, mine tailings and mineral concentrates. The impeller, casing and other wetted components should be selected according to particle size, hardness and solids concentration.
What pump is suitable for acidic slurry before a filter press?
A corrosion-resistant slurry pump with suitable UHMWPE or fluoroplastic wetted components can be considered for acidic slurry. The final material selection depends on acid concentration, pH, temperature and solids content.
Why is variable-frequency control used with a filter press feed pump?
Variable-frequency control allows the pump operating speed to be adjusted during different stages of the filtration cycle, supporting high-flow initial filling and higher-pressure operation as filter resistance increases.
What pressure can a filter press feed pump provide?
Changyu filter press pump configurations can have rated working pressure in the range of approximately 0.6–1.6 MPa, depending on the selected configuration and operating conditions. The actual pressure requirement must be confirmed from the filter press and process specifications.
What information is needed to select a filter press feed pump?
Important parameters include slurry composition, solids concentration, particle size, specific gravity, pH, temperature, required flow, required pressure, filter press model and pipeline conditions.
