Project Background
The customer is a Japanese company specializing in the development and production of high-performance synthetic rubber materials. Its production line involves the precise proportioning and transfer of various chemical materials, including corrosive caustic soda solution, polymerization-prone styrene, relatively viscous latex, as well as antioxidants and defoamers used for process control.
Because these media differ in chemical properties, flow characteristics, and transfer requirements, a single pump type could not be used for all applications. For chemical media in particular, pump selection needs to consider the properties of the medium, temperature, flow rate, head, material compatibility, and site piping conditions.
After reviewing the customer’s production process and on-site transfer requirements, Changyu engineers configured BFQ Series air-operated double diaphragm pumps and CYH Series stainless steel centrifugal pumps according to the characteristics of the different media. The combination of two pump types was used to meet the transfer requirements of the production section.
Changyu’s Synthetic Rubber Pumps Solution
Considering the variety of process media and differences in operating conditions, Changyu did not use a single pump type for the entire application. Instead, each medium was matched with an appropriate pump type and material based on its physical and chemical characteristics and actual transfer requirements.
| Process Medium | Recommended Pump | Selection Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Latex, Antioxidants, Defoamers | BFQ Series Air Operated Double Diaphragm Pump | Latex has a certain viscosity, so pump operating speed and the shear effect on the material need to be considered during transfer. The BFQ uses diaphragm-driven operation, and its transfer condition can be adjusted by regulating air supply pressure and operating frequency. It is therefore suitable for process liquids where controlled transfer is required. Its ability to run dry and strong self-priming capability also make it suitable for media containing small amounts of solids or media that may settle. |
| Styrene | CYH Series Stainless Steel Centrifugal Pump | Styrene is a volatile organic medium, so temperature, sealing condition, and wetted-material compatibility need to be carefully considered during transfer. The CYH uses a stainless steel pump body and mechanical seal structure. The sealing and wetted materials can be configured according to the actual medium temperature and chemical properties to meet continuous transfer requirements. |
| Caustic Soda Solution | CYH Series Stainless Steel Centrifugal Pump (316L) | Caustic soda solution is highly corrosive. The CYH was configured with 316L stainless steel for this application, providing corrosion resistance for continuous operation. Its wide flow range can also accommodate different flow requirements at different stages of the production line. |

What Problems Did These Pumps Address?
In synthetic rubber production, stable material transfer can affect the consistency of the final product’s molecular weight and physical properties. The main challenge in this project was not the transfer of a single medium, but the presence of multiple process liquids with different characteristics within the same production section. Each medium has different requirements for pump type, materials, sealing, and operating conditions, so separate pump selection was required.
The BFQ air-operated double diaphragm pump was used for latex and additive transfer. Its operating condition can be adjusted pneumatically according to production requirements, helping control the transfer process. The BFQ also uses a diaphragm-driven structure that keeps the transferred medium separated from the pneumatic drive section, which can reduce the leakage risks associated with conventional shaft-sealing structures.
The CYH stainless steel centrifugal pump was mainly used for the continuous transfer of styrene and caustic soda solution. The pump configuration was determined according to the properties of each medium, together with the pump body material, sealing arrangement, actual flow rate, and head, to meet the continuous transfer requirements of the production section.
Equipment in Operation on Site
Changyu Engineers’ Selection and Operating Recommendations
For chemical liquid transfer in synthetic rubber material production, Changyu engineers do not select a pump based only on flow rate and head. The actual operating conditions of the medium should be confirmed first.
For latex and other emulsions with a certain viscosity, it is important to understand the viscosity, solids content, and tendency to settle. For volatile chemical media such as styrene, the medium temperature, sealing arrangement, and wetted-material compatibility should be confirmed. For caustic soda solution, the specific concentration and temperature should be provided before determining the appropriate pump body and wetted-part materials.
The actual operating point should also be determined according to piping length, inlet and outlet pressure, and whether the pump will operate continuously or intermittently. For continuous production lines, the pump should not be operated for extended periods outside its intended operating range.
Therefore, for similar projects, customers are recommended to provide the medium name, concentration, temperature, flow rate, and head before pump selection. Changyu engineers can then confirm the appropriate pump type, materials, and configuration based on the actual operating conditions rather than recommending a pump based only on the name of the medium.
Conclusion
The equipment for this project was installed in August 2025, with a 10-day installation period followed by 2 days of commissioning. Based on the characteristics of different media used in the Japanese customer’s synthetic rubber material production section, Changyu combined BFQ Series air-operated double diaphragm pumps with CYH Series stainless steel centrifugal pumps to provide suitable transfer equipment for styrene, caustic soda solution, latex, antioxidants, and defoamers.
The key to this project was not using one pump type for every medium, but matching the pump type and materials to the properties of each medium, the transfer requirements, and the actual site conditions.
If your rubber, synthetic material, or fine chemical production process involves the transfer of styrene, latex, caustic soda solution, or other chemical liquids, contact Changyu engineers for pump selection support. By providing the medium name, concentration, temperature, flow rate, head, and site piping conditions, the appropriate Synthetic Rubber Pumps and configuration can be evaluated according to your actual operating requirements.
