  • Bảng dữ liệu an toàn hiện tại, hay SDS.

A single mechanical seal may suit a duty where the assessment supports it. A double mechanical seal may be considered where additional containment or a controlled seal environment is required. It also needs an appropriate support arrangement.

For either option, resolve five questions:

  1. Which seal-face and secondary-seal materials are specified?
  2. What pressure and temperature will the seal chamber experience?
  3. Is cooling, flushing, or a separate support fluid needed?
  4. Is that support fluid compatible with the process?
  5. How will support conditions be monitored and maintained?

Do not treat a double seal as a guarantee of zero leakage. Define the required containment performance and the response to loss of support.

Changyu’s supplied maintenance guidance identifies dry running, poor cooling, vibration, particles, and blocked flushing as possible seal-failure causes. These checks matter even when the selected metal is chemically suitable.

Lời khuyên thực tế: if replacing a failed seal, record when leakage began. Startup, the end of a batch, and a change of solvent blend point to different conditions worth investigating.

5. Separate vapour pressure from flash point

A solvent transfer pump enquiry needs both properties where relevant, because they answer different questions.

Vapour pressure affects the risk of liquid vaporising as inlet pressure falls. Flash point relates to the formation of ignitable vapour under specified test conditions. One value cannot replace the other.

A warm, volatile solvent can become difficult to feed into a pump through a restrictive suction line. A low tank level or vessel under vacuum can make the problem worse.

Calculate net positive suction head available, or NPSH available, using the actual liquid and installation. Compare it with the selected pump’s requirement at the intended flow, including a suitable application-specific margin. The Hydraulic Institute’s pump FAQs explain suction and NPSH concepts. Use the selected model’s curve and your solvent properties for the project calculation.

Do not copy a water-based suction-lift assumption into a solvent transfer pump specification. A successful cold trial also does not prove that the pump will work with warm liquid near the end of a batch.

6. Design for the lowest tank level

A full tank usually offers more inlet pressure than a nearly empty one. Review the whole transfer cycle, including the point where the pump must stop.

Check suction-pipe diameter and length, strainers, valves, air pockets, and possible air leaks. Provide suitable outlet geometry and submergence for the intended flow. Piping should have independent support so it does not load the pump connections.

Consider an illustrative batch transfer. The pump runs steadily at first, but flow becomes unstable as the tank empties. Possible causes include reduced NPSH available, air entering the outlet, or a blocked strainer.

The correct response is to check those conditions. Depending on the findings, the design may need a lower pump position, fewer suction losses, a revised flow, or a higher shutdown level. A larger motor is not a general solution.

Set a minimum operating level and suitable protection. A standard centrifugal solvent transfer pump should not be expected to empty a vessel completely while continuing to run dry.

7. Check hazardous-area requirements for the complete installation

Where a flammable atmosphere can occur, the responsible site specialist must define the area classification and equipment requirements. Include those requirements in the enquiry from the start.

An explosion-proof motor alone does not establish that a solvent transfer pump installation is suitable. The review may include the pump, coupling, instruments, electrical equipment, and other potential ignition sources.

Specify the applicable gas group, temperature classification, equipment protection requirements, and jurisdiction. Request documentation for the exact supplied configuration.

Static control also involves the transfer system. Bonding and grounding, where required by the assessment, must account for hoses, containers, connections, and handling methods as well as the pump body.

The UK Health and Safety Executive’s DSEAR guidance explains the assessment of dangerous substances, hazardous areas, and ignition risks. It is an authoritative UK reference; projects elsewhere must follow their applicable local requirements.

This guidance is not a certification claim for a Changyu product. The project needs documented suitability for its selected equipment and installation.

8. Size the solvent transfer pump for the real duty

Calculate flow from the volume and transfer time. Then establish total dynamic head from tank levels, vessel pressures, pipe losses, filters, valves, and receiving equipment.

bơm chuyển dung môi

For example, transferring 10 cubic metres in 20 minutes requires an average flow of 30 cubic metres per hour. That figure starts the calculation; it does not select the model. The required head and inlet conditions still need to be established.

Ask for a pump curve showing the normal duty and expected range. Include both the beginning and end of the batch, since changing tank levels can shift the operating point.

Motor selection should use the actual liquid properties and absorbed power across the permitted range. If viscosity differs significantly from water, review the effect on pump performance and power.

Also define how flow will be controlled. On/off operation, throttling, and variable speed create different conditions. Avoid routine operation against a closed discharge or below the manufacturer’s permitted minimum flow.

For thick liquids, substantial solids, or precise low-flow dosing, review the pump principle before proceeding with a standard centrifugal design.

9. Make startup and maintenance repeatable

Prepare the startup procedure from the supplied instructions and site assessment. Confirm rotation, priming, flow paths, seal-support readiness, and protective devices before normal operation.

Record normal flow, pressures, current, and seal-support conditions after commissioning. When performance changes, compare those values with the baseline.

If a solvent transfer pump starts leaking or loses capacity, check the liquid composition, tank level, temperature, suction restrictions, and support system before replacing components. This helps separate a worn part from a changed operating condition.

Maintenance must follow the site’s isolation, draining, ventilation, and exposure-control procedures. A stopped motor does not mean the pump is empty or free from solvent vapour.

Frequently asked questions

Can a stainless steel centrifugal pump transfer solvents?

Yes, for compatible liquids and suitable operating conditions. Selection must cover the entire wetted assembly, flow and head, suction conditions, seal arrangement, and site requirements. Stainless steel construction alone does not establish suitability for every mixture.

Is 316L always needed for a solvent transfer pump?

No. The required grade depends on the mixture, water content, contaminants, temperature, and cleaning exposure. Some duties can use another grade. Review elastomers and seal faces at the same time; a metal upgrade does not solve every compatibility problem.

Is an explosion-proof motor enough for flammable solvent service?

No. The complete equipment and installation must meet the requirements established by the site assessment. This includes applicable electrical and non-electrical ignition risks, static control, operating conditions, and documentation for the specified configuration.

Why does flow fall near the end of a batch?

Available inlet pressure falls as the tank level drops. Air entry or vaporisation may then affect performance. Check temperature, minimum level, submergence, inlet losses, and the pump operating point. Define the stop condition before the pump runs dry.

Can one solvent transfer pump handle fresh and recovered liquid?

Possibly, but assess both mixtures. Recovered solvent can contain water, particles, or dissolved contaminants. Those changes may affect corrosion, seals, viscosity, and vapour pressure. Define the permitted composition range before treating both duties as equivalent.

Should I choose a drum pump or a fixed installation?

Choose around the handling task. Occasional container dispensing may favour a container-specific design. Sustained tank transfer may suit a fixed industrial installation. Both options need suitable wetted materials, flow control, and compliance with the site’s operating requirements.
