Introduction

The FZB Series Self-Priming Centrifugal Pump features a metal casing lined with plastic, with all flow-passing components manufactured from fluoroplastic alloys. The pump cover, impeller, and other components are made from metal inserts encased in fluoroplastic and formed through integral sintering and pressing. The shaft seal employs an advanced external bellows mechanical seal. The stationary ring is made of 99.9% alumina ceramic (with a graphite sleeve and silicon carbide), while the rotating ring uses PTFE-filled material, providing excellent corrosion and wear resistance. Both the inlet and outlet of the self-priming pump are reinforced with cast steel bodies to enhance the pump’s pressure resistance.

The FZB Self-Priming Pump has an extremely wide range of applications, including biopharmaceuticals, petrochemicals, mining and metallurgy, textile printing and dyeing, power generation, food processing, papermaking, electroplating, wastewater treatment, flue gas treatment, new energy, and new materials industries. Examples include: pumping corrosive liquids from underground tanks to designated locations; pumping acids and alkalis from tanks with bottom discharge ports to designated locations; transferring acids and alkalis from drums to large storage tanks; and unloading various types of corrosive tank trucks.

Working Principle of the Changyu Pump FZB Series

The Changyu Pump FZB Series utilizes an external-mix gas-liquid separation structure. Its operation is defined by a continuous “mixing, separation, and recirculation” cycle, enabling the pump to evacuate air from the suction line and achieve self-priming without a foot valve.

Phase 1: The Priming & Vacuum Generation

  • Initial Charge: Before the first startup, the pump casing must be filled with a priming liquid. The FZB design ensures this liquid is retained within the chamber for all subsequent operations.
  • Centrifugal Agitation: Upon activation, the high-speed rotation of the impeller flings the priming liquid toward the outer volute, creating a significant low-pressure vacuum zone at the impeller eye.
  • Induction of Air: Due to the pressure differential, air from the suction pipe is drawn into the pump body, where the impeller violently mixes it with the priming liquid to form a highly aerated gas-liquid emulsion.

Phase 2: Gas-Liquid Separation & Recirculation

  • Deceleration & Exhaust: The aerated mixture is forced into the oversized separation chamber. Here, the flow velocity drops abruptly, allowing air bubbles to break free from the liquid and escape through the discharge outlet.
  • Internal Recirculation: The denser, degassed liquid sinks to the bottom of the chamber and returns to the impeller via a recirculation port. This “heavier” liquid then picks up more air, continuing the evacuation process.

Phase 3: Transition to Normal Centrifugal Flow

  • Steady-State Operation: This cycle repeats until the suction line is entirely evacuated of air (reaching a self-priming height of up to 5 meters).
  • Automatic Transition: Once the vacuum is fully established and the liquid column reaches the impeller, the pump automatically transitions into standard centrifugal mode, delivering a steady, high-pressure flow of corrosive media.

FAQs

A: A self-priming pump is a type of pump designed to automatically remove air from its casing and create a vacuum, allowing it to start pumping liquid without needing to be manually filled with fluid first. This makes it ideal for applications where the pump may need to handle air or restart after losing prime.

A3: A self-priming pump typically doesn’t need to be manually primed before each use. However, it usually requires an initial priming—filling the pump casing with liquid—before the first operation. After this, the pump can automatically re-prime itself if it loses prime during operation.

A5: The choice depends on the application:

Self-Priming Pump: Better for above-ground installations where the pump may need to handle air and maintain prime. It’s suitable for situations where the pump can’t be submerged.

Submersible Pump: Better for pumping water from below ground or fully submerged situations, like in wells or sumps. It’s quiet and efficient in submerged applications.

Each is best suited for different situations.

A2: The main disadvantages of self-priming pumps include:

  • Lower Efficiency: They can be less efficient compared to standard pumps due to the additional mechanisms required for self-priming.
  • Longer Priming Time: The process of self-priming can take longer, especially if the pump has to remove significant amounts of air.
  • Limited Suction Height: They typically have a lower maximum suction lift compared to other types of pumps.
  • More Maintenance: The added complexity of self-priming mechanisms may require more maintenance and increase the risk of mechanical issues.

These factors should be considered when choosing a pump for specific applications.

A4: The choice between a centrifugal and self-priming pump depends on the application:

  • Centrifugal Pump: Better for applications with continuous flow and low-viscosity liquids where priming is not a concern. It is generally more efficient and has fewer moving parts.
  • Self-Priming Pump: Ideal for situations where the pump may need to handle air or where maintaining prime is a challenge, such as in applications with varying fluid levels.

Each has its advantages, so the best choice depends on your specific needs.

A: Yes. Changyu Pump engineers the FZB Series with a 2-3mm thick F46 (FEP) or PFA lining molded into a metal casing. This construction is designed for corrosive chemical transfer, making it resistant to nearly all concentrations of strong acids, alkalis, and strong oxidizers, often outperforming expensive titanium or alloy pumps.
