Why Standard Pumps Fail in Seawater Applications
Seawater is one of the most aggressive fluids for industrial pumps. High salinity, chloride ions, and dissolved solids can rapidly damage standard centrifugal pumps, leading to unexpected failures and increased maintenance costs.
If your system operates in marine or desalination environments, using a standard pump design can result in serious operational risks:
Common Problems in Seawater Pumping Systems
- Severe Corrosion from Chloride Ions
Chloride-rich seawater causes pitting and crevice corrosion, especially in low-grade stainless steel such as 304. This leads to rapid material degradation and leakage. - Short Service Life & Frequent Replacement
Standard pumps are not designed for continuous seawater exposure, resulting in premature wear of impellers, casings, and shafts. - Cavitation & Performance Instability
Improper hydraulic design in seawater conditions can cause cavitation, vibration, and reduced efficiency. - High Maintenance & Downtime Costs
Frequent seal failures and corrosion-related damage increase maintenance frequency and total cost of ownership.
How CYH Centrifugal Sea Water Pump Solves These Problems
The CYH series is specifically engineered to handle the challenges of seawater environments:
- Advanced Corrosion-Resistant Materials
Available in 316L, Duplex (2205), and Super Duplex (2507) to withstand chloride attack. - Optimized Hydraulic Design
Reduces cavitation risk and ensures stable, long-term operation. - Heavy-Duty Structure for Marine Conditions
Designed for continuous duty in desalination plants, offshore platforms, and seawater cooling systems. - Extended Service Life with Lower Maintenance
Minimizes downtime and reduces lifecycle costs.
The centrifugal seawater pump is available in 304, 316, 316L,2205, 2507 stainless steel, and super duplex stainless steel materials, suitable for conveying seawater, brine, and organic solvents of various concentrations. Typical applications include ballast and firefighting systems on ships, seawater aquaculture operations, seawater desalination plants, seawater pressurization and lifting systems, and various industrial processes requiring reliable seawater conveyance.

Working Principle
The centrifugal seawater pump operates by converting mechanical energy from a driver—such as an electric motor, engine, or turbine—into kinetic and pressure energy of the liquid. As the impeller, mounted on the pump shaft, rotates at high speed within the pump casing, seawater enters through the suction side and is accelerated outward along the impeller blades. The casing then guides the flow, transforming the liquid’s velocity into pressure before discharging it through the outlet. This design enables continuous, efficient transfer of large volumes of seawater under stable pressure.
Parts of Centrifugal Sea Water Pump
A centrifugal sea water pump is primarily composed of the impeller, pump casing, and drive unit.
- The impeller is fixed to the pump shaft inside the casing, and when it rotates at high speed, seawater is drawn in through the eye of the impeller and expelled rapidly from the blade tips.
- The casing channels the flow and converts the kinetic energy into pressure, while bearings within the housing support the pump shaft.
- The drive unit supplies the rotational power required, commonly via an electric motor, though engines or turbines can also be used.

- Impelle: We use duplex stainless steel or 316L stainless steel (custom materials available). The impeller adopts a semi-open design to improve seawater passage efficiency. Its optimized hydraulic profile reduces cavitation and ensures stable operation in corrosive marine environments.
- Pump Casing: The pump casing is manufactured from corrosion-resistant stainless steel materials. It provides a reliable pressure boundary and ensures smooth flow guidance inside the pump. The reinforced structure maintains stable performance during long-term seawater operation.
- Shaft: The shaft is made of high-strength stainless steel with corrosion-resistant treatment. It is precisely machined to ensure accurate alignment and stable torque transmission, reducing vibration during continuous operation in marine applications.
- Mechanical Seal: We use silicon carbide or tungsten carbide mechanical seal materials. The seal structure is designed to prevent seawater leakage under high salinity and pressure conditions, ensuring reliable sealing performance and extended service life.
- Bearing Assembly: The bearing assembly is designed for continuous heavy-duty operation. It uses corrosion-resistant components to reduce friction and maintain stable shaft rotation, ensuring reliable performance under long operating cycles.
- Base Frame: The base frame is constructed from reinforced carbon steel with anti-corrosion coating. It ensures stable installation of the pump and motor, reduces vibration during operation, and supports flexible installation in marine environments.
